A brand naming process: make the name part of the positioning

A strong brand name does not need to explain every feature, but it should leave a distinctive and expandable memory. The goal is not to find a perfect word in one moment; it is to create a process that makes trade-offs clear.

Write a one-page naming brief

  • Who is the audience, and how do they describe the problem today?
  • What feeling should the brand promise beyond its functional role?
  • Should the name be descriptive, suggestive, compound, or newly coined?
  • Which sounds, words, and cultural associations must be avoided?

Keep several creative directions alive

Develop at least three directions: direct descriptive language, suggestive imagery, and more distinctive compound or invented words. Comparing directions against the positioning helps a team move beyond personal taste.

Test the name outside the meeting room

Ask people who did not help create the name to repeat its spelling and first impression after hearing it once. Put it into a homepage title, app icon, customer-support opening, and spoken introduction. Friction in real contexts is usually more useful than a room vote.
