Before using a company name: a trademark and domain checklist

Before a strong candidate receives design, marketing, or registration investment, it deserves basic verification. NameLab does not provide trademark or legal conclusions; this checklist helps a team organize its next step.

Set the scope first

Write down the planned countries or regions, goods and services, preferred spelling, and likely variants. Without a clear scope, “we checked it” is hard to rely on later.

Basic checks to organize

  • Search relevant official trademark databases or work with a qualified professional in the right jurisdiction.
  • Check the main domain, sensible extensions, spelling variants, and confusingly similar names.
  • Check company registries, app stores, and key social handles.
  • Ask native or highly fluent speakers to review pronunciation, meaning, and unintended associations.

Keep a decision record

For each finalist, record the date, markets, findings, and the reason for your decision. Obtain appropriate professional advice before registration or commercial use.
