COMPANY NAMING GUIDE · 7 min readHow to name a company: from positioning to a usable shortlist
A company name is not a slogan or a pile of industry keywords. It should set a useful expectation for the people you want to reach and leave room for the business to evolve.
1. Write a one-sentence positioning statement
Answer who you help and what problem you solve. “A collaboration tool that reduces meeting load for small teams” creates a much clearer naming boundary than “an AI productivity platform.”
2. Define character and constraints
- Choose three character words, such as expert, restrained, warm, or bold.
- List overused category language, competitor associations, and words that are off limits.
- Name your primary markets and decide whether future products or categories need room to grow.
3. Compare more than first impressions
Use sound, spelling, memorability, meaning, expandability, and cross-cultural risk as separate lenses. First screen ideas within the team, then ask people unfamiliar with the business what they hear and remember.
4. Verify only the short list
A promising idea is not automatically available to use. Take a small shortlist through appropriate trademark, domain, company-name, social-handle, and local-language checks before investing in identity work.
